Our success stories illustrate Hull House Association’s depth of involvement in the day-to-day life of Chicago communities. The stories remind us of our connection to Jane Addams’ mission of neighbors helping neighbors. Here are 3 stories of remarkable individuals who epitomize the best of what Hull House programs and services can accomplish.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program ~ Tim Gunning
Tim Gunning enjoys meeting new people. He likes it so much, in fact, that he can say hello in dozens of different languages. And he insists that “Namaste” a Hindi expression meaning, in Tim’s own words, “the hearts and souls of two people have just met, and they will become nice to each other”, should be an international greeting. “It’s the greatest expression on earth!” he exclaims. Sister to Sister ~ Timeica Bethel
The words “sisterly love” have a special meaning to Timeica Bethel. Growing up with two younger sisters, she understands the bonds, the arguments, and above all, the unconditional love sisters share. But it wasn’t until Timeica was 12, when she joined Hull House’s Sister to Sister program, held at LeClaire-Hearst Community Center that she began to fully recognize and appreciate these relationships. Jane’s Place at Nettlehorst Elementary ~ Michael Morrow
Michael Morrow began performing when he was just three years old. He would regularly break into song as a toddler, when his mother immediately recognized him as a talented and outgoing child. In kindergarten, Michael made his stage debut, and has been performing for audiences ever since. “I don’t get nervous, I just know all my lines,” Michael says, confident in his abilities. Emerge ~ Ebony Austin
Ebony Austin knows what it’s like to bounce from home to home. After growing up with a mother who cared for foster children, Ebony moved in with her grandmother to break away from the increasingly cramped environment. When her grandmother passed away, Ebony repacked her bags to live in a studio apartment with her aunt. But again, the living situation became too tight, and Ebony realized it was time to make a change. Read More »
