Illegal Solicitor
Several individuals have been unlawfully soliciting funds from the general public alleging that Jane Addams Hull House Association and/or its domestic violence shelter is going out of business and the funds collected would be used to save the organization. This is false. *Please note the photo of the petition and an alleged solicitor on the right.*
Despite all efforts to inform the public through written correspondence, Hull House’s website, the Better Business Bureau, and a feature article in the “What’s Your Problem” column in the Chicago Tribune, Hull House has been unable to curtail the misrepresentations circulated in the public.
As you may understand, Hull House can not afford to allow unscrupulous individuals, who prey upon the good nature of others, to continue to collect funds, primarily cash, for his or her gain.
Of course, we are taking every action to find the individuals and prosecute them. But, during this time of giving, Hull House would like to provide the public with greater awareness and would like for your organization to support us in this effort.
As such, Hull House is asking you and your organization to help us to stop this unlawful activity by taking the following steps:
- Make a public service announcement on your radio and/or television show.
- Post warnings in Union Station, Ogilvy Transportation Center and other public venues like post offices, Millennium Park, the United Center, and the Chicago Civic Opera House. (These are areas where people have informed us the solicitor is commonly located.)
- Discuss the concern at CAPS meetings
- Make an announcement over the loud speaker system in public venues
When fraudulent behavior takes place, it compromises the success of legitimate fundraisers done by Hull House. In these times of recession and greater need, Hull House suffers when this person(s) is allowed to continue this fraudulent behavior.
Thank you in advance for your consideration of this matter. Any support that you can provide would be appreciated. If you have any questions and/or concerns, please contact Briana Solarte via email or phone at 312-235-5397.
